Cancer Prevention

Can cancer prevention (and health maintenance) be that easy?

Three slices of wholegrain bread a day (for instance) reduce the risk of many metabolic diseases

A very detailed meta-analysis[1] (which included 45 cohort studies from Europe, the USA and Asia with up to 705,252 test subjects) was published in 2016 in the British Medical Journal.

It confirmed what had long been speculated as well as observed: consuming whole grains benefits health. In fact, it has spectacular effects on the prevention of various diseases as long as whole grain intake is at least 90 g a day. This lowers the risk of

  • diabetes by 51 %
  • infectious diseases by 26%
  • respiratory diseases by 22%
  • coronary heart disease by 21%
  • cardiovascular disease by 16%
  • all-cause mortality by 17 % (in fact, consuming 200 g of whole-grain products a day lowered all-cause mortality by 28%)
  • all-cancer mortality by 15% and
  • stroke by 13%.

Generally, risk reductions for the above illnesses were observed up to a daily intake of 210 to 225 g.

The positive health effects of wholemeal products may be due to the dietary fibres they contain. These are not or only partially broken down in the intestines, create a feeling of satiety and help prevent overweight and constipation. They reduce postprandial glucose and insulin levels, lower blood pressure and levels of triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol and inflammatory markers and have many other health benefits (see e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dietary_fiber).

Of course, we also get dietary fiber from other plant sources such as legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds.

Generally, a healthy lifestyle (see this entire website for inspiration, perhaps starting with Preventing Cancer the Natural Holistic Way) will go a long way towards preventing malignant developments.
