Homeopathic remedies for symptomatic relief of radiotherapy side effects

Published in The Oncologist, researchers were able to show that conventionally treated lung cancer patients at an avanced stage of their disease lived significantly longer under complementary homeopathic treatment than patients in the placebo and control group.

If you have opted for radiotherapy treatment, here are various recommended homeopathic medications to alleviate the symptoms liable to arise. These remedies are largely following those suggested by the International Homeopathic Society of Supportive Care In Oncology and are not to be considered as medical advice (see Disclaimer).

To prevent, alleviate and/or heal the side effects of radiotherapy

To forestall stress and agitation during the centering scan (as well as generally during radiotherapy sessions), take

• Gelsemium sempervirens 30 C.

Dosage: 10 pellets the day before the scan, 10 pellets on the day itself and/or on radiotherapy session days.

When side effects arise during radiotherapy

• Radium bromatum 9C, 3 pellets a day.

The patient may require a consultation with a specialised homeopath.

Radiation burns (radiodermatitis — radiation damage to the skin)

• X-ray 15C, 3 pellets a day

Radiodermatitis, grade 1

To be taken together:

• Apis mellifica 30 C

• Belladonna 6 C

3 pellets of each 3 times daily.

A slightly different homeopathic prescription for superficial radiation burns:

• Apis mellifica 9 C: for skin burns with redness (erythema), relieved by cold applications.

• Belladonna 9 C: for skin burns with redness (erythema), worsened by cold applications.

Radiodermatitis, grade 2

• Cantharis 6C

3 pellets 3 times a day

A slightly different homeopathic prescription for deeper radiation burns:

• Cantharis 5C: for skin burns with blistering, also take 3 pellets 3 times a day.

Diarrjhea

• Arsenicum album 30C

at a dose of 3 pellets to be taken in the evening.

• Podophyllum 6C

Take 3 pellets 3 times daily while diarrhea lasts.

Constipation

• Opium 6C

Take 3 pellets 3 times daily.

Mucositis (inflammation and ulceration of the mucous membranes of the mouth) prevention and treatment

• Borax 5C: when there are white specks with red edges, burning pain and easy bleeding. Take 3 pellets 3 times daily.

• Kalium bichromicum 9 C: when there are small ulcers, frequently on the palate, with prickly pain and viscous saliva.

• Mercurius corrosivus 9C: when the mucosa is dark red and causes a violent burning pain; swallowing, even one's own saliva, is very painful; saliva flows profusely.

Take 3 pellets of each 3 times a day.

You can also take Kalium bichromicum and Mercurius corrosivus diluted in water: shake the mixture well and, take a mouthful 3 to 5 times a day.

Fatigue

A 5-days course of Acidum phosphoricum in increasing potencies:

• Day 1 and 2: Acidum phosphoricum 6C, 10 pellets each

• Day 3 and 4: Acidum phosphoricum 12C, 10 pellets each

• Day 5: Acidum phosphoricum 30C, 10 pellets

If required, repeat every 10 days (making a total of 3 courses per month).
