Combatting radiation poisoning tips
Chelating excess ionizing radiation and radioactivity from your body
by copyright Healing Cancer Naturally © 2006/7 & 2016
Have you submitted your body to ionizing radiation either for medical diagnostic purposes (fluoroscopy/mammography/other medical x-ray exams such as Ct scans and PET scans) or in the course of radiotherapy treatment?
Or are you otherwise concerned by excessive radiation exposure, overload or poisoning (such as living near a nuclear reactor facility, working with diagnostic radiological equipment/in the nuclear processing industries/uranium mining or plutonium processing)?
Have you been exposed to radioactive particles or higher ionizing radiation doses stemming from other sources such as depleted uranium (DU), testing of atomic weapons, frequent flights in higher altitudes etc.?
Here are a number of tips and suggested remedies how to naturally help your body excrete damaging radioactive elements (e.g. strontium and radioactive iodine) or detoxify (or scavenge) their noxious byproducts such as free radicals by using dietary, nutritional, herbal and other naturopathic approaches and modalities.
The supporting research studies quoted here have been gleaned from PubMed, the official biomedical database publishing only scientifically validated research [English-language].
Even more specific advice has been assembled under Radiation burns treatment.
Note: Healing Cancer Naturally does not endorse conventional cancer and tumor treatment by radiation therapy (radiotherapy/X-rays).
Macrobiotic diet against radiation sickness
Barbara Brennan writes in her classic book "Light Emerging": “If you are having any kind of radiation treatments, consider going macrobiotic. According to Michio and Aveline Kushi, macrobiotics is very effective in curing radiation sickness. In his book 'Macrobiotic Diet', Michio Kushi states:
‘At the time of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945, Tatsuichiro Akizuki, M.D., was director of the Department of Internal Medicine at St. Francis Hospital in Nagasaki. Most patients in the hospital, located one mile from the center of the blast, survived the initial effects of the bomb, but soon after came down with symptoms of radiation sickness from the radioactivity that had been released.
Dr. Akizuki fed his staff and patients a strict macrobiotic diet of brown rice, miso[1] and tamari soy sauce soup, wakame and other sea vegetables, Hokkaido pumpkin, and sea salt and prohibited the consumption of sugar and sweets. As a result, he saved everyone in his hospital, while many other survivors in the city perished from radiation sickness.’”[2]

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) baths (testimonial)
“If you were near Chernobyl or if you had X-rays or radiation treatments for cancer, my radionics practitioner said that you can soak your body in baking soda baths to help pull out the radiation from your body. If you look all over the web, there is talk about patients who have had mouth cancer who were given radiation treatments to get rid of the cancer, and then told to gargle with baking soda mixed in water.”
Tip: If you look for online sellers of baking soda, you might pay a fraction for it as compared to buying in a store or pharmacy as long as you buy larger amounts (which you will need if you plan on bathing regularly). A friend bought it very cheaply on Ebay but there are bound to be similar venues where online merchants offer inexpensive baking soda.
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) rinses
The study A research review of the current treatments for radiation-induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer published in Oncology Nursing Forum (2002) arrived at the conclusion that “the most effective measure to treat radiation-therapy-induced mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer is frequent oral rinsing with a sodium bicarbonate rinse, to reduce the amount of oral microbial flora.”
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate/bicarbonate of soda) plus sea salt baths
Similarly to the above, Barbara Brennan in her book "Light Emerging" recommends to take 20-minute baking soda cum sea salt baths (mixing half a pound of salt and half a pound of baking soda) to drain the body of DOR (deadly orgone energy as described by Dr. Wilhelm Reich).
Since such baths are “energy draining”, she advises to be careful when getting up from them (circulation) and lie naked in the sun afterwards to recharge one’s battery.
Tip: When running the bath, better add the salt when the bathtub is somewhat filled already to avoid possible damage to any metal parts (corrosion).

Epsom salt
Epsom salts are a cheap white powder made of crystals of hydrated magnesium sulfate (chemical formula MgSO4 7H2O) which is used as a purgative etc. Any pharmacy or drug store should carry it. Use in baths. Epsom salts baths were part of this “terminal” colon cancer victor’s protocol.
Zeolites (as clinoptilolite powder)
Zeolites (a family of naturally occurring minerals, also produced in synthetic form) have been used to clean up water contaminated with radioactivity and similar pollutants and apparently also successfully applied to chelate various environmental and other toxins from the human body as well as as a successful cancer treatment (both in human cancer patients and in dogs who had developed spontaneous tumors, i.e. not cancer artificially induced in the laboratory).

Schindele's minerals (Superbiomin)
Discovered by Austrian Robert Schindele, Superbiomin is a natural volcanic rock powder which contains numerous minerals and trace elements. According to the report by expert Dr. Erik Mikura, its special chemical composition is found nowhere else in the world.
Superbiomin powder has been credited with numerous health benefits — perhaps due to a similar "mechanism" as occurs with the intake of seaweed, i.e. replenishing depleted mineral stores and providing missing trace elements to the body.
In his book, "Superbiomin: The 'Superbiomin' With Its 26 Mineral Elements for Human Beings, Animals And Nature", Robert Schindele reports the case of a man damaged by radiation from uranium mining (he suffered from a disease of the spinal cord, trembling hands, and an itching body). After several days of taking the powdered volcanic rock, the trembling was gone as were all his other complaints.
Urine therapy
Dr. G.K. Thakkar writes in his book "Wonders of Uropathy" that a radiologist from Nagpur, India, named Dr Parekh informed him "that via urine therapy he got rid of the x-ray radiation which he had suffered due to constant exposure during his radiological practice".
Dietary fiber
The study Dietary fibers as radiation protectors published in the Russian-language Voprosy Pitaniia in 1997 found that fiber had radioprotective properties, preventing the incorporation of nuclides and accelerating their elimination. The study used concentrates of dietary fibers isolated from lemon peel, beetroot residues, grape seeds and other plants.
Eating fruits and vegetables
A study published in the British Journal of Cancer in 2003 titled Vegetables and fruit intake and cancer mortality in the Hiroshima/Nagasaki Life Span Study had followed 38,540 atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki between 1980 and 1998.
The study found that daily or almost daily fruit consumption was linked to a 12% reduction in cancer mortality. It found additional evidence that daily fruit and vegetables consumption reduces the risk of all cancers, particularly those of the stomach, liver, and lung.
DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide)
Archie H. Scott in his book The DMSO Handbook for Doctors describes studies supporting the use of DMSO in cases of excess radiation exposure and as a preventative before radiotherapy to avoid radiation burns, radiation cystitis etc. DMSO was also successfully used after the damage had already been done. More on DMSO (which can be self-applied at home) under DMSO helps against lymphedema?.
Radiation cystitis has also successfully been addressed with ozone.
Peppermint (Mentha × piperita)
According to the study "Radioprotective potential of mint: A brief review" by Baliga MS and Rao S., published in the Journal of Cancer Research and Therapeutics (2010), two species of the humble mint (Mentha piperita and Mentha arvensis) show promise regarding radioprotective effects in humans.
The aromatic herbs have protected mice against the sickness and mortality induced by γ-radiation, and M. piperita aqueous extract protected the radiosensitive organs (testes, gastrointestinal and haematopoietic system).
The underlying mechanisms are speculated to include free radical scavenging, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimutagenic effects, metal chelation, as well as enhancement of the DNA repair processes. (Animal experimentation results are of course far from reliable indicators what works for humans, and for this and ethical reasons Healing Cancer Naturally strongly opposes the practice.)
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
Rosemary is a time-honoured aromatic herb with numerous medicinal uses. Among other applications, rosemary essential oil shows antimicrobial activity against many bacteria, yeasts and fungi (as stated in the official Pharmacopoea Europaea) and can be used both topically (in a 6-10 percent solution) and internally at a dose of 3–4 drops.
A study published in 2009 found one of its compounds — rosmarinic acid — to be photo-protective against UV and other types of ionizing radiation, see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/19084569 .
Another study (from 2006) found more radioprotective effects of rosemary compounds, see Radioprotective-antimutagenic effects of rosemary phenolics against chromosomal damage induced in human lymphocytes by gamma-rays.
To benefit from these and other virtues of rosemary, it may be wisest to include the fresh herb in one's daily foods and drinks (such as in vegetable-based smoothies).
Caffeic acid — a very common secondary plant compound
A study titled "Caffeic acid protects human peripheral blood lymphocytes against gamma radiation-induced cellular damage" published at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/18561333 showed that this extremely common plant compound (it's actually found in all plants) has promising radioprotective potential.
This database provides a list of all foods in which caffeic acid can be found and in which amounts.
Apple pectin
Pectin is a soluble fiber found in large amounts in fruits such as raw pears, guavas, plums, oranges and other citrus fruits, with fresh apples at 1–1.5% pectin content being one of the richest sources. Commercially pectin is mostly produced from citrus peels (30% pectin) and apple pomace.
Pectin has multiple helpful effects in the human body such as
- as a good source of fiber, it forms a gel that can absorb toxins in the colon
- pectin appears to reduce the damaging effects of cholesterol[3]
- as a stool-bulking agent, it is useful both against constipation and diarrhea
- pectin binds to various toxic heavy metals such as mercury and lead
- pectin fibre contains the glyconutrient Galactose
- prescribed before a liver and gallbladder flush, apple juice and its pectin content apparently helps soften the stones
- apple pectin appears to draw radioactive waste from the body and to help excrete it via the colon.
After the Chernobyl disaster, apple pectin was used to reduce radioactive cesium levels in children, see the randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study comparing an apple-extract containing 15-16% pectin with a similar placebo-powder, titled Reducing the 137Cs-load in the organism of 'Chernobyl' children with apple-pectin, published in Swiss Medical Weekly (2004) (137Cs is a radioactive isotope of caesium).
The 2010 book "Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment (Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences)" by Alexey V. Yablokov confirms that Russian research into pectin's radioprotective effects showed that administering apple-pectin preparations promoted effective excretion of incorporated radionuclides in Chernobyl victims, with results demonstrating up to 50% improvement over control groups.
Similar studies include
- The use of pectin-containing enterosorbents in exposure to radionuclides and heavy metals
- Pectin-containing products in the dietary nutrition of subjects exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station
- The efficacy of the internal use of Slavyanovsk mineral water and a pectin extract in the combined health resort treatment of children exposed to radiation action
- The use of pectin hydrogel in the therapy of acute postradiation epitheliitis and trophic disorders
Even beyond possible radiation and heavy metal chelation benefits, with fresh apples and freshly squeezed apple juice being such a rich source of multiple nutrients and health benefits, it makes sense to include them as a staple in one's daily diet. Make sure to use ony unsprayed (organic or wild) apples.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture can help ease symptoms after radiation cancer treatment, see e.g. Acupuncture Therapy in Post-Radiation Head-and-Neck Cancer with Dysgeusia and generally https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=acupuncture+radiation+cancer.
Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone with multiple functions and health benefits synthesized by the human body (albeit only under conditions of darkness) as well as available as a supplement (in capsule, tablet, sublingual, or liquid form as well as as a transdermal patch).
As shown in the literature review Melatonin protection from chronic, low-level ionizing radiation (published in Mutation Research in 2011), melatonin can also help protect DNA against (or reduce the damage from) chronic, low-level ionizing radiation due to radioactive caesium (137Cs), cobalt (60Co) or X-rays.
Melatonin's protective action against ionizing radiation is thought inter alia to be due to its efficacy as a free radical scavenger. Melatonin supplements are well absorbed, virtually devoid of side effects, and well tolerated even over the long term.

Footnotes
1 Miso: paste made from fermented soya beans and barley or rice malt, used in Japanese/macrobiotic cookery
2 If you follow Dr. Johanna Budwig’s healing diet & protocol (which reportedly has also helped heal heavily irradiated (and “chemotherapied”) cancer patients formerly considered terminal and written off as beyond hope, see Budwig Testimonials), I would advise integrating the above-listed food items featuring prominently in the macrobiotic diet, such as seaweed, organic brown rice, miso soup etc. while leaving out or strongly curtailing honey and sweet fruit which are not permitted or heavily restricted in macrobiotics. Make sure to use truly organically grown foods: whole-grain rice is particularly laden with pesticide and similar toxic residues.
3 Elevated cholesterol actually can have anti-cancer benefits, see On the link between cholesterol and cancer incidence: high cholesterol levels associated with lower cancer risk.
